The 32nd Annual Gotham Awards Winners

On the evening of November 29th, The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards winners. The below winners were announced on a live stream hosted by Variety.

Besides the regular awards trophies, Career Tributes were awarded to Michelle Williams and Adam Sandler, director Gina Prince-Bythewood, and the Industry Tribute to Focus Features’ Vice Chairman Jason Cassidy and Chairman Peter Kujawski.

An Ensemble Tribute was awarded to the cast of Fire Island, including Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomás Matos, Torian Miller, Nick Adams, Zane Phillips, and Margaret Cho.

An Impact Tribute was given to the Venice International Film Festival and its director Alberto Barbera in honor of the festival’s 90th anniversary and how the festival finds the best and brightest filmmakers and independent films to highlight each year.

An Innovator Tribute was given to Don Katz, Founder and Executive Chairman of Audible.

In its second year, the Icon Tribute, created to highlight the boldness, artistry, and impact of a filmmaker from a marginalized community whose work has gone unrecognized by The Gotham, was awarded to the late actor, filmmaker, and activist Sidney Poitier.

On that note, Jonathan Majors announced the creation of The Gotham Sidney Poitier Initiative, a set of programs developed to support the next generation of filmmakers. The program will focus on mentorship, scholarship, project funding, and career advancement. The SPI Founders Committee is made up of a collective of actors, directors, producers, writers, and executives.

Also announced at the ceremony: Executive Director of The Gotham, Jeffrey Sharp, took the stage to welcome Gotham-supported filmmakers from two of the organization’s most recent initiatives - the previously announced Fellows of the new Documentary Development Initiative in partnership with HBO Documentary films, as well as announcing the latest five graduate student winners in the Focus Features & JetBlue Showcase.

Focus Features & JetBlue Short Film Showcase

This program is designed to discover and empower a diverse pool of emerging filmmakers and help distribute their work across multiple platforms. The winners of the fourth annual Focus Features & JetBlue Short Film Showcase will receive a grant of $10,000 and have their short films shown for twelve months on JetBlue’s seatback entertainment system under the “Gotham Selects” movie category, and anywhere Focus Features has a streaming presence. Winning filmmakers also receive ongoing mentorship and workshopping opportunities from The Gotham and “Every House” Soho House worldwide membership.
