79th Golden Globe Award Nominees

After almost a year of controversy, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the nominees for the 79th Golden Globes.

To catch you up to speed, the HFPA was revealed to have numerous ethical and financial lapses surrounding the popular ceremony a week before last year's Globes. Two days before the 78th Globe Awards, the HFPA issued a short statement addressing the situation, but not saying a ton to remedy people's fears. Then, the HFPA announced reforms in March 2021 but didn't give a whole lot of details on how said reforms would be implemented. A week after, they announced the hiring of Dr. Shaun Harper as their Strategic Diversity Advisor for the next five years. At this point, people weren't satisfied with how little the HFPA was changing. Shortly after the hiring of Dr. Harper, the HFPA announced that the Association would add 100 members in 2021, with a requirement that 13% of the membership of the new members be Black journalists. After this, the HFPA went dark until May 7th, 2021, when they announced a reform plan of the Association. Three days later, they detailed the timeline for reform (coincidentally, the same day NBC dropped the 79th Golden Globes). Almost two weeks later, the HFPA established a reporting hotline maintained by Convercent to allow anyone to report misconduct by the HFPA or its members. The same day, the HFPA also announced a new Code of Conduct. Just shy of a week later, the HFPA hired DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Advisors to enforce their reform plan. In August 2021, the HFPA approved the reform bylaws and promised a new board would be elected by early September 2021, which they did ahead of schedule on August 31st. On September 9th of 2021, Helen Hoehne was elected as the Association's President after being a member since 2004, having served on the Board of Directors from 2012 to 2019 and Vice President for one year. Shortly after Hoehne's appointment, the HFPA announced they appointed three non-members to the Board of Directors to ensure their reform plan goes according to, well...plan. Following suit, not long after this appointment, the HFPA named three outside advisors tasked with helping oversee new member selection. The week after, the HFPA announced that five journalists would be helping the Credentials Committee select new members. On October 1st, 2021, the HFPA announced their 2021 class of new members and the appointment of Todd Boehly as Interim CEO. Six days later, the HFPA and NAACP announced a five-year collaborative partnership. On November 3rd, 2021, the HFPA hired Neil Phillips as their Chief Diversity Officer.

Those grand gestures are great and very much overdue, but whether that change actually means anything will be up to time and the way that diversity is reflected in this year's nominees.

As the first major association to announce the nominees, the Globes are the first step on the march towards the Oscars. So, here are the nominees for the 79th Golden Globe Awards without further ado! If you're interested in any of these films or television shows, I'll have links to my reviews.
