Deadpool & Wolverine Review

Editors Note: After revisting Deadpool & Wolverine for the purposes of reviewing the digital copy of the film, my views have changed. While I was initally captivated by the pure excitement of seeing these two characters on screen again, a closer examination revealed significant flaws in the film’s premise and execution. My digital review reflects my updated thoughts, focusing on both the strengths and shortcomings the film and its digital release.

Introduction

It’s been over six years since Deadpool 2 graced the big screen, just a month after Avengers: Infinity War. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has evolved with the Fox-Disney merger and the multiverse expansions on Disney+. So, when Hugh Jackman was announced to return as Wolverine for a third Deadpool film in September 2022, my excitement skyrocketed to the level I felt after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The chance to see these two iconic characters on screen again after the misstep of X-Men Origins: Wolverine felt like a dream come true. With Jackman’s Wolverine being a significant part of my childhood, my anticipation was high. Now that I’ve seen Deadpool & Wolverine, did it meet those expectations? Spoiler alert: It did, and then some.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the Merc with a Mouth is even more unhinged than before, with nearly 120 f-bombs and a knack for obliterating anyone who crosses him. Wolverine, meanwhile, is a grittier, battle-worn version that kept me guessing about his role throughout the film. The multiverse exploration introduces fun subversions and surprising moments that even my younger self, playing with action figures, could’ve dreamed up. If you’re worried this film is just a cameo fest, rest assured it’s not. The story is irreverent, surprisingly poignant, and visually stunning. With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their roles, the chemistry between Deadpool and Wolverine is electric, blending humor with intense action in a fresh yet familiar way.

Story

Deadpool & Wolverine is all about unexpected partnerships and the impact of legacy. When the Time Variance Authority (TVA) from Loki recruits Deadpool to help protect the multiverse, a simple mission quickly turns into a chaotic, multiverse-spanning adventure. The film mixes Deadpool’s wild humor with heartfelt moments, especially as it explores the characters’ pasts. The narrative is full of twists and turns, keeping Marvel fans engaged while highlighting the dynamic relationship between the titular characters.

Directing

Shawn Levy's direction in Deadpool & Wolverine is sharp and dynamic. As someone who has worked with Reynolds before on The Adam Project, he can balance the film's irreverent humor with its deeper emotional moments. Levy's knack for blending fast-paced action with poignant character moments ensures that the film remains engaging from start to finish. His direction gives each scene room to resonate with the audience as well as maintain the film's chaotic energy.

Cast

No Deadpool film would be complete without Ryan Reynolds’ sharp wit and charm. He once again proves he’s perfect for the role, deepening Deadpool’s character with a mix of unhinged and introspective moments. Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, offering a grittier and more vulnerable performance, surpassing even his role in Logan. This Wolverine, scarred from over 200 years of life, stays true to the X-Man we know. The chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman makes their partnership a blast to watch.

The ensemble cast is equally impressive. Emma Corrin delivers a chilling performance as Cassandra Nova, making her a memorable antagonist. Matthew McFadyen’s Mr. Paradox adds depth to the multiverse storyline with his enigmatic and often hilarious presence. Returning characters like Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa, Rob Delaney’s Peter, Leslie Uggams’ Blind Al, and others, despite limited screen time, contribute significantly to Deadpool & Wolverine’s charm.

Writing

The writing in Deadpool & Wolverine strikes a brilliant balance between irreverence and emotional depth. The script, by Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy, is filled with sharp dialogue and meta humor that fans expect. It balances humor with introspection, keeping the audience laughing while delving into deeper themes. This balance feels more refined and impactful than in previous Deadpool films, with clever twists that ensure the story remains fresh and engaging, no matter how many times you watch it.

Visuals

The visuals in Deadpool & Wolverine are striking. The action sequences are dynamic and thrilling, with attention to detail that makes each punch and explosion feel powerful. The film combines practical effects with CGI, which looks a bit off in some frames but otherwise creates a seamless experience. The vibrant settings and intense battle scenes contribute to a visually diverse yet cohesive style, drawing the audience into its intricately designed world.

Music

The soundtrack in Deadpool & Wolverine is vibrant and diverse, matching the film’s energetic style. The music boosts each scene's mood, featuring classic and modern tracks by NSYNC, Stray Kids, Fergie, Huey Lewis and the News, and Aretha Franklin, creating a soundtrack I cannot stop listening to. Likewise, Rob Simonsen’s vibrant and diverse score blends orchestral and electronic sounds, creating something I've never heard before and perfectly emulating its titular characters.

Sound

Eric A. Norris’ sound design is immersive and inventive, complementing the film’s score and soundtrack. Crisp sound effects and a well-balanced mix by Colin Nicolson and his team give equal weight to every action and explosion, enhancing the film’s enjoyment.

Editing

Shane Reid and Dean Zimmerman’s editing is stylish and effective, keeping the pace brisk in one of the longest entries in the Deadpool franchise. Transitions between settings are seamless, supporting the film’s chaotic energy without disrupting the flow. The editing highlights key moments of action and emotion, letting each scene resonate with the audience.

Production Design

Raymond Chan’s production design is imaginative and thorough. The film features diverse multiverse environments, each with a unique look that defines its universe. This attention to detail enhances the film’s immersive quality, making each location feel integral to the story.

Costume Design

Graham Churchyard and Mayes C. Rubeo’s costume design pays tribute to Deadpool and Wolverine’s iconic looks while adding MCU flair. Deadpool’s suit is as outrageous as ever, while Wolverine’s blue and yellow suit blends his classic comic look with a battle-worn appearance. The detailed costumes add depth to the characters and the film’s visuals, delighting comic book fans.

Makeup

Bill Corso’s makeup design, along with Jon Moore’s special effects makeup, brings striking realism and detail to Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool’s prosthetics are improved to better reflect his cancer-ridden state and closely resemble Reynolds. Wolverine’s rugged appearance and depiction of injuries add realism and authenticity, drawing me in every time he’s onscreen.

Wrap-up

In conclusion, Deadpool & Wolverine delivers on its ambitious premise, blending irreverent humor with sincere emotional depth. The vibrant visuals, exhilarating action, and thoughtful script make it a standout addition to the Deadpool franchise. Although it may not wrap up loose ends from previous films or fully integrate the franchise into the MCU, it offers an electrifying ride for fans of the Merc with a Mouth and the MCU.
